Manitoba Water
Systems and Spring Flooding
Water
System Owners and Operators are reminded to be extra vigilant and plan for
sandbagging wells, pump houses and water treatment plants well in advance of
spring flooding.
Water
supplies with historic flood advisories should contact their regional Drinking
Water Officers in advance of water topping wells, entering pump houses or
treatment plants so an advisory can be issued and the public duly notified in
advance of the emergency. Water systems in areas with historic flooding
should consider installing a snorkel device or other type of well cap that can
prevent flood water from enter the well.
If
your well has been topped and once the flood water recedes there are steps the
water supplier must take to protect your well and the public. Well remediation
will be similar to the information for the private wells at https://www.gov.mb.ca/asset_library/en/spring_outlook/after_flood_booklet.pdf. Where flood water has
encroached on wells, pump houses or plants, you are reminded of your regulatory
obligation to contact your regional Drinking Water Officer during normal
business hours or the ERT afterhours line at 204-944-4888.
